An unusual bet, a basket of flowers, and a strong-willed girl are all parts of Pygmalion, performed by students at Redeemer Christian High School.

George Bernard Shaw’s classic is a critique of Britain’s class system. Written in 1912 and premiered in 1913 at the Hofburg Theatre in Vienna, Pygmalion tells of young Eliza Doolittle, a working-class Cockney who is mentored by two high-class men, Henry Higgins and Col. Pickering, in the ways and means of upper-crust society. Her integrity and her daring clash with the men’s traditional values and beliefs, resulting in a powerful commentary.

The students of Redeemer Christian High School used a memorable and authentic-looking setting to strengthen their performance and they skillfully portrayed the little quirks and qualms of British society. Strong performances by the cast captured the serious undertones of Shaw’s work and incorporated the humour of the play.

It’s 1942, and the Second World War holds the globe firmly in its grip. Men are on the front, women are up to their elbows in factory work and the rich and famous are schmoozing, boozing and funneling their thousands into the war effort from a safe distance. Many of the world’s most affluent individuals have arrived in Florida to attend the illustrious Palm Beach Royale Hotel’s benefit, where rival starlets, Claudia McFadden and Athena Sinclair, have miraculously agreed to perform. Unfortunately, there’s a catch; the two women refuse to be anywhere near each other, and when they are booked into the same suite, it’s a struggle to keep the clashing divas apart. Fortunately, even with war on their doorstep, St. Patrick’s High School entertained with an energetic performance of the farce, aptly entitled Suite Surrender.

The show, written by Michael McKeever, has appeared on stages from South Florida to Germany. Underneath layers of larger-than-life comedy, Suite Surrender reflects a trying reality of the human condition; the selfish needs of individuals take precedence even with a global catastrophe at hand. This is the case for all at the Palm Beach Royale: everyone from Athena Sinclair to star struck bellhop, Otis, has their own agenda. And everyone is willing to risk the success of the benefit in order to satisfy their own desires.

Stella Bashizi embodied the revenge-bent Claudia McFadden with determination, taking to the stage with a strong voice and forceful presence. Olivia Kennedy took on the role of her rival, Athena Sinclair, and delivered well-timed lines with charm. Together, the warring divas brought both verve and tension to the stage.

SLOVYANSK, Ukraine - Sustained gunfire was heard throughout the night near the eastern Ukrainian city of Slovyansk, the stronghold of pro-Russia fighters, ahead of a second round of European-brokered talks on Saturday aimed at resolving the crisis.

The Russian Foreign Ministry issued a statement condemning what it described as a sharp escalation in the violence in eastern Ukraine, accusing the Ukrainian government of using the talks as cover for military operations against its citizens.

The fighting began when forces loyal to the Kyiv government moved in to protect a television tower near the small village of Andriyivka. Residents said it went on through the night.

Debris from the shooting was visible Saturday morning, including a badly damaged train and craters caused by mortar bombs or other heavy artillery.

The Russian Foreign Ministry said some people were wounded, but gave no specifics.

Government forces in recent weeks have achieved only limited results in quashing the pro-Russia groups that have declared independence for Ukraine's eastern Donetsk and Luhansk regions. Polls have shown, however, that a majority of eastern Ukrainians support a united country, although most are too fearful of the armed separatists to say so publicly.

During a recorded March 2010 conversation about Islam, played at the second day of an Ottawa terrorist trial, two alleged co-conspirators are heard sharing opinions about the tactics of the Canadian security services and the dangers of using computers.

“Brother, all of our brothers have been visited,” says the accused Misbahuddin Ahmed . . . “multiple times some of them.”

“That’s what I’m saying,” says his alleged co-conspirator. “Their purpose is to scare you . . . They can put fear in your heart and then sit back.”

Ahmed responds: “But you know how stupid CSIS is, though? They have nothing. Not even legally, they don’t have anything; unless you have something specific, then they transfer the file to RCMP. RCMP is like rough. One of the brothers told me they really are.

“They’re like little dogs that run around, look to see if they can find any water holes to lick from.”

“They do things with a recorder ,” adds the alleged co-conspirator, who also cautions that the RCMP monitor website use, and that he doesn’t trust his computer: “I don’t trust this, I don’t trust it at all.”

Tim Hudak’s plan for Ontario is bold but it is not clear.

You find this out if you try to make sense of the numbers of jobs he says he’d cut and the ones he says his policies would create.

Hudak says, in his I’m-a-reasonable-man voice, that he’d cut 100,000 jobs from a public payroll of a million.

To arrive at that tally, though, the Tories have to include nearly 275,000 people who work for local governments across the province. There’s no other way to make the numbers add up. The province’s direct employees and the “broader public sector” of school boards, universities, hospitals and Crown corporations only add up to about 775,000.

If the Tories are going after cities and towns, that opens whole new vistas of potential service chops and — perhaps more politically importantly — drags influential local politicians into the election. Mississauga Mayor Hazel McCallion signed on with the Liberals the other day over transit funding, for instance.

Bulking up the numbers of current bureaucrats makes political sense: the bigger the public sector Hudak wants to cut from, the more warranted and less painful the cuts sound. The obvious conclusion is that the 275,000 local-government employees are on the cuts list, too.

Aboriginal women are over-represented among murder victims in Canada and, alarmingly, their presence in those statistics is only growing, according to a report from the RCMP.

The report, called a “national operational overview on missing and murdered aboriginal women,” identified 1,181 missing and murdered aboriginal women between 1980 and 2012. The new figure outpaces previous numbers based on research conducted by aboriginal women’s organizations. Aboriginal women represent approximately 4.3 per cent of Canada’s female population, but on average 16 per cent of female homicide victims and 11.3 per cent of missing women over the period studied.

However, as the rate of female homicide victims has steadily decreased over the last 30 years, the rate for aboriginal women has remained steady. In 2012, aboriginal women represented 23 per cent of female homicide victims, compared to 8 per cent in 1984.

Of the 1,181 cases, 225 remain unsolved, including 105 missing persons cases and 120 homicides. The RCMP noted solve rates were roughly the same for aboriginal and non-aboriginal women at just under 90 per cent.

“We knew intuitively that the numbers were higher…but I would say that personally I was surprised by the overall number,” said Dep. Comm. Janice Armstrong at a press conference in Winnipeg Friday morning.

In all cases of female murder victims, the perpetrator is overwhelmingly likely to be a male who knows the victim, but there were some differences identified between aboriginal and non-aboriginal cases. Aboriginal women were more likely to be killed by an acquaintance than a spouse and were more likely to have a history of violence with the offender.

OTTAWA — Conservative MP Michael Chong’s Reform Act will be debated by MPs in the Commons in late May — possibly providing the first clues of whether it will have enough support to eventually become law.

The private member’s bill strips party leaders of a key power to veto election candidates and hands clear rules to party caucuses on dumping their leader.

In an interview with the Ottawa Citizen, Chong said he believes there is wide public support for his legislative initiative and that more MPs are coming onside.

“The response has been overwhelming,” said Chong, who has travelled throughout the country to explain the bill’s contents since he introduced it last December.

“Public support has been broad. There has been a great deal of interest from different quarters. Civil society groups, the universities, law schools, ordinary citizens. It has been a tremendous response.”

But what matters most is whether Chong can convince enough MPs to support the bill so it can be sent to a committee for further study, and ultimately passed into law.

Canada has spared two Russians with links to Montreal-based transportation giant Bombardier Inc. from sanctions, even though the U.S. has targeted them for their respective roles in President Vladimir Putin’s inner circle.

While Canada has sanctioned 80 Russian and Ukrainian officials compared to 60 by U.S., Vladimir Yakunin and Sergei Chemezov are among three Russians sanctioned by the U.S. but not by Canada.

The omissions raise questions about the role Bombardier’s business interests may have played in the federal Conservative government’s response to the situation in Ukraine.

Yakunin is the head of Russia’s state-owned railway company. The U.S. slapped sanctions on him in March, noting he is a close confidant of Putin and “accompanies Putin on many domestic and international visits.”

Bombardier has a joint venture with Russian Railways that company spokesman Marc Laforge said does about $200 million in business related to the provision of railway signalling equipment each year.

The Canadian company is also gearing up to compete for what could be billions of dollars in work replacing Russia’s aging train cars in advance of its hosting soccer’s World Cup in 2018.

La situazione tecnica di breve termine rimane costruttiva ma, prima di poter effettuare un nuovo allungo, sarà necessaria una fase riaccumulativa al di sopra del sostegno intraday situato in area 9.580-9.570 punti.

L’Eurostoxx50 future si è invece scontrato con quota 3.200 e ha subito una brusca correzione, con i prezzi che sono scesi in area 3.140-3.135 punti. La situazione tecnica rimane positiva ma, prima di un ulteriore allungo, è probabile una fase laterale di consolidamento al di sopra del supporto posizionato in area 3.110-3.105 punti. Nuova battuta d'arresto per Unicredit, che sta confermando la veloce correzione di ieri e ha già raggiunto il supporto di breve a 6,17-6,15 euro: per il momento il test non si è tradotto in un breakout ribassista, ma il quadro tecnico rimane precario e proprio una discesa sotto 6,17-6,15 finirà per imporre una nuova accelerazione negativa con un target naturale verso 6,05-6 euro. Gli indicatori di tendenza sono allineati in posizione short e gli oscillatori di momentum stazionano al di sotto delle rispettive soglie di equilibrio confermando la ridotta forza relativa di questa fase. Nella seduta di giovedì Intesa SanPaolo ha subito una brusca flessione con le quotazioni che sono scese fino a quota 2,20 euro. La situazione tecnica si conferma quindi precaria con i principali indicatori direzionali che rimangono in chiara posizione short. Il forte ipervenduto di brevissimo termine può innescare un rimbalzo tecnico che dovrà tuttavia affrontare un duro ostacolo in area 2,27-2,30 euro. Difficile quindi il ritorno al di sopra di quest’ultimo livello. Una nuova flessione avrà invece un primo target a 2,16-2,15 euro. (riproduzione riservata)

Nel corso delle ultime sedute il quadro tecnico del mercato azionario italiano si è deteriorato. L’indice Ftse-Mib ha infatti subito una brusca correzione, innescata dalla marcata debolezza del comparto bancario, ed è sceso fino a quota 20.400 punti. L’analisi dei principali indicatori quantitativi evidenzia un pericoloso rafforzamento della pressione ribassista, con l’Macd e il Parabolic Sar che si trovano in posizione short mentre l’Adx evidenzia come la consistenza dei venditori sia aumentata in modo rilevante. Probabile quindi un’ulteriore flessione (alimentata anche dall’importante stacco dividendi che si verificherà all’inizio della prossima settimana) che avrà un primo target a ridosso dell’importante soglia psicologica dei 20.000 punti e un secondo obiettivo in area 19.750-19.700 punti. Un eventuale rimbalzo tecnico, alimentato dal forte ipervenduto di brevissimo termine, dovrà invece affrontare un primo ostacolo a 21.000 punti e una seconda resistenza, sia grafica che volumetrica, a 21.350-21.400 punti. Improbabile quindi il ritorno al di sopra di quest’ultimo livello.

Le borse del vecchio Continente. Le altre borse europee non hanno invece confermato il superamento di solide resistenze grafiche e hanno accusato una veloce correzione. Il Dax, ad esempio, si è scontrato con quota 9.800 (livello che coincide con i massimi assoluti raggiunti alla fine del mese di gennaio) mentre l’Eurostoxx50 è stato respinto dai 3.200 punti. La struttura tecnica di breve termine rimane costruttiva ma, prima di un nuovo allungo, è necessaria una fase laterale di riaccumulazione. Importante, sotto questo punto di vista, la tenuta dei supporti grafici posti in area 9.450-9.400 per il Dax e attorno a 3.130 per l’Eurostoxx50. Soltanto una discesa al di sotto di queste zone potrebbe fornire un segnale d’inversione ribassista. Al rialzo, invece, un nuovo segnale long di tipo direzionale arriverà con il breakout, confermato in chiusura di giornata, di quota 9.800 da parte del Dax. Un’analisi intermarket fornisce tuttavia diversi elementi di debolezza: il Bund ha infatti compiuto un nuovo spunto rialzista e si è spinto fino a quota 146,75 punti (nuovi massimi storici) mentre il cambio Euro/yen ha ceduto il sostegno posto in area 140-139,90, fornendo un pericoloso segnale d’inversione ribassista. Due segnali che sono incompatibili con il proseguimento del trend rialzista che nel corso delle ultime settimane si è sviluppato sui mercati azionari europei.

Il Nikkei ha chiuso in calo dell'1,41% a quota 14.096,59 punti, perdendo lo 0,7% sulla settimana. Il più ampio indice Topix ha perso l'1,63% a 1.159,07 punti. L'unico dato macro importante è arrivato dal Giappone la cui produzione industriale di marzo è stata rivista da +0,3% a +0,7% mese su mese nella lettura definitiva.

Anche nel resto dell'Asia, eccetto l'india, ha prevalso un atteggiamento di prudenza. Dopo la diffusione di un dato preoccupante sull'andamento dei crediti deteriorati, cresciuti nel primo trimestre a un tasso che non si vedeva dal 2005: Hong Kong perde lo 0,6% e Shanghai lo 0,2%.

Il leader nazionalista indù, Narendra Modi, si prepara a conquistare il potere: le sue promesse di nuovi posti di lavoro e di sviluppo economico hanno conquistato l'elettorato deluso dal Partito del Congresso, storicamente legato alla dinastia Nehru-Gandhi, che ha già riconosciuto ufficialmente la sconfitta. Si va verso una schiacciante vittoria del Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) e i suoi alleati a scapito del partito al potere da dieci anni.

Il BJP è in testa con 268 seggi dei 543 del parlamento indiano. E' dunque prossimo a ottenere la maggioranza assoluta, fissata in 272 seggi. Il Partito del Congresso ha già riconosciuto di avere perso la sua battaglia elettorale. "Accettiamo la sconfitta. Siamo pronti a sedere sui banchi dell'opposizione", ha detto Rajib Shukla, alto dirigente del partito. Contemporaneamente, la rupia indiana si è portata sui massimi dall'agosto 2013 a quota 81 contro euro.

Piazza Affari cerca di recuperare terreno dopo la pesante caduta di ieri. L'indice Ftse Mib sale dello 0,18% a 20.456 punti. Lo spread tra Btp decennali e omologhi tedeschi, dopo aver terminato ieri la sua corsa al rialzo a quota 180 punti base, oggi cala leggermente a 178 punti con un tasso del decennale, tornato sopra il 3%, che si attesta al 3,11%. L'impennata è sempre legata al dato sul pil italiano che nel primo trimestre è tornato a scendere dello 0,1%. Il differenziale Bonos/Bund segna invece 171 punti per un rendimento del 3,03%.

Sul listino milanese non tutte le banche, ieri duramente colpite dalle vendite, reagiscono: Intesa Sanpaolo scende dell'1% a 2,178 euro e Unicredit dello 0,77% a 5,78 euro, meglio Mps in crescita dello 0,46% a 21,98 euro e soprattutto la Banca popolare dell'Emilia Romagna che si apprezza dello 0,88% a 6,90 euro dopo che ieri sera a mercato chiuso l'agenzia internazionale Standars & Poor's ha posto sotto osservazione per un possibile upgrade il rating long-term, BB-, in seguito all'annuncio della banca di volere procedere a un'operazione di rafforzamento patrimoniale fino a un massimo di 750 milioni di euro.

Al contempo, Standars &Poor's ha confermato il rating short-term di Bper a B. L'azione di CreditWatch riflette la possibilità che l'agenzia di rating possa rivedere al rialzo il rating se l'operazione di aumento di capitale si concluderà con successo nei termini proposti, consentendo alla banca di migliorare la propria dotazione patrimoniale al di sopra della soglia incorporata nell'attuale livello di rating e di essere in grado di mantenerla nel corso del tempo.

Standars & Poor's prenderà una decisione in merito al rating solo quando saranno noti i dettagli sull'esecuzione e le condizioni dell'operazione di rafforzamento patrimoniale e del probabile impatto che esso avrà sulla capacità della banca di operare in modo sostenibile con un livello di capitale maggiore rispetto a quello che l'agenzia attualmente incorpora nei propri livelli di rating.

LOS ANGELES (AP) — Ed Lucas homered for Miami during a six-run second inning in which second baseman Dee Gordon's fielding error led to five unearned runs, and the Marlins scored another six runs two innings later to rout the Los Angeles Dodgers 13-3 on Wednesday night.

Anthony DeSclafani (1-0) allowed two runs and seven hits over six innings to earn the win in his major league debut.

Reed Johnson had a two-run homer and Jeff Mathis added a three-run shot in support of DeSclafani, a 24-year-old right-hander who was inserted into the rotation after Marlins ace Jose Fernandez was placed on the disabled list on Monday with a torn ligament in his elbow and became another high-profile candidate for Tommy John surgery.

PHILADELPHIA (AP) - Garrett Richards helped Mike Trout have a perfect homecoming trip.

Richards tossed a five-hitter over seven sharp innings and the Los Angeles Angels beat the Philadelphia Phillies 3-0 on Wednesday to sweep a two-game interleague series.

Trout went 1 for 4 with a triple, walk and stolen base. The two-time All-Star went 2 for 9 in his first series against the team he rooted for growing up. Trout grew up in nearby Millville, New Jersey. More than 4,000 people from the small town came to see him Tuesday night, and there were plenty of fans wearing No. 27 Angels jerseys in the stands again.

"It was a quick two days, two wins," Trout said. "It's been a blast. I was feeling something special just driving to the stadium."

Richards (4-0) struck out eight with no walks and lowered his ERA to 2.42. Ernesto Frieri pitched a perfect eighth, and Joe Smith finished off the five-hitter for his fifth save in seven tries.

PHILADELPHIA -- The Los Angeles Angels, with a curious and perplexed look on their faces, kept staring across the field the last 36 hours at Citizens Bank Park.

They were trying to figure out who the Philadelphia Phillies reminded them of after completing a two-game sweep Wednesday with a 3-0 victory.

OAKLAND (AP) — Less than two months into his career, Jose Abreu is already the guy the Chicago White Sox want at the plate when the game is on the line.

Abreu hit a three-run homer in the eighth inning, and the White Sox snapped a four-game losing streak with a 4-2 victory over the Oakland Athletics on Wednesday.

"We realize what he is and how important he is to us," manager Robin Ventura said. "When you get in situations like that you're pretty glad he's up there. That's what he means to us. You always feel like you're in a good spot if he's up there with guys on."

Gordon Beckham homered on the first pitch of the game for the White Sox, who rallied against Oakland's bullpen to end a seven-game losing streak at the Coliseum.
