PHILADELPHIA (AP) - Garrett Richards helped Mike Trout have a perfect homecoming trip.

BOX SCORE: Angels 3, Phillies 0

Richards tossed a five-hitter over seven sharp innings and the Los Angeles Angels beat the Philadelphia Phillies 3-0 on Wednesday to sweep a two-game interleague series.

Trout went 1 for 4 with a triple, walk and stolen base. The two-time All-Star went 2 for 9 in his first series against the team he rooted for growing up. Trout grew up in nearby Millville, New Jersey. More than 4,000 people from the small town came to see him Tuesday night, and there were plenty of fans wearing No. 27 Angels jerseys in the stands again.

"It was a quick two days, two wins," Trout said. "It's been a blast. I was feeling something special just driving to the stadium."

Richards (4-0) struck out eight with no walks and lowered his ERA to 2.42. Ernesto Frieri pitched a perfect eighth, and Joe Smith finished off the five-hitter for his fifth save in seven tries.

We crave speed. It's one of the greatest allures in the game, especially when it comes in the form of a fireballing young pitcher.

It's also a risky commodity.

The devastating news that Miami Marlins ace Jose Fernandez likely will require Tommy John elbow surgery hammered that point home yet again, as if we needed a reminder.

The Marlins team doctor recommended season-ending surgery Tuesday night. Fernandez wants to discuss his options with his family.

Since the beginning of spring training, Fernandez will be the 18th pitcher on a major league roster to need elbow reconstruction because of a tear in the ulnar collateral ligament, already surpassing the average from 2000-11 (15.8) and nearly equaling last season's total of 19.

Moreover, Fernandez will become the third pitcher among the top seven hardest-throwing starters from last season (minimum 100 innings) to undergo the procedure. From that group, Matt Harvey had the operation last year and Stephen Strasburg in September 2010.

BALTIMORE (AP) - Detroit's Justin Verlander wasn't overly concerned with his less-than-stellar outing against the Baltimore Orioles on Wednesday.

Instead, he focused on the final result: another Tigers' victory.

BOX SCORE: Tigers 7, Orioles 5

Rajai Davis homered, and Detroit overcame a rare shaky performance by Verlander to complete a three-game sweep of the Orioles with a 7-5 victory.

The Tigers have won 12 of their last 15 games, including eight in a row on the road.

Baltimore has lost four straight.

HOUSTON (AP) — The Houston Astros didn't realize how long it had been since they won a series against the Texas Rangers.

That's largely because no one on the current roster was on the team the last time it happened.

Matt Dominguez hit an RBI single off the right-field wall in the ninth inning and the Astros beat the Rangers 5-4 Wednesday night to win a series against their in-state rivals for the first time since 2008.

The Astros took two of three after losing 15 straight series to the Rangers. Houston overcame a four-run deficit to win.

"Oh man, it's been that lon?. Wow," said Houston starter Scott Feldman, who was playing for the Rangers when Houston last won a series against Texas from June 24-26, 2008. "It's nice to get a series win against anyone, but I had no idea it had been that long. It's great. Hopefully we can just build on that and hopefully win the next series as well."

BOX SCORE: Astros 5, Rangers 4

HOUSTON (AP) — The Texas Rangers put left-handers Matt Harrison and Martin Perez on the disabled list Wednesday, and could be without both starters for an extended period.

General manager Jon Daniels said that Harrison was diagnosed with significant nerve irritation in his vertebrae. He will have an injection Friday in an attempt to alleviate the symptoms before considering other options, including surgery.

Harrison, who made only two starts last season before two operations on a herniated disk in his lower back, came out in the second inning of his start Tuesday night at Houston. Daniels said the pitcher had a tingling sensation down his left leg, similar to what he experienced before having surgery last year.

Perez has a partial tear of his ulnar collateral ligament in his left elbow. He could have an injection and rehab that could keep him out three months, or possibly have Tommy John surgery and miss a year.

Right-hander Nick Tepesch was recalled from Triple-A Round Rock for his scheduled start Wednesday night against Houston. The Rangers also purchased the contracts of right-handers Scott Baker and Miles Mikolas from Round Rock, and designated right-hander Justin Germano for assignment.

Tepesch was starting in place of Yu Darvish, who threw 126 pitches in his near no-hitter Friday night. The Japanese ace was given extended rest and is set to start Friday at home against Toronto.
